| China Southern Airlines is the
largest airline of the People Republic of China. In November 1996,
the Chinese and Dutch governments formally agreed on the operation
of a new route for China Southern between Guangzhou – Beijing
– Amsterdam, which was the airline’s only European destination.
Designed to offer business travelers and tourists greater choice when
flying between Europe and Asia, the route was also to capitalize on
the important cargo business for which the Netherlands is world-renowned.
Throughout 2002, the Group continues to rank first among all Chinese
airlines in terms of volume of passenger traffic, number of scheduled
flights per week, number of hours flown, number of routes and size
of aircraft fleet. As of mid-June 2002, the Group operated 323 routes,
of which 263 were domestic, 39 were International and 21 were Hong
Kong routes. In July 2001, KLM Royal Dutch
Airlines and China Southern Airlines signed a cooperation agreement
which enabled both airlines to expand their services between China
and The Netherlands. Since the winter of 2001/02, KLM has added
a third weekly round-trip flight between Amsterdam and Shanghai.
In summer 2002 KLM intends to add a fourth weekly round-trip flight
on the route between Amsterdam and Beijing. China Southern currently
operates two weekly round-trip Boeing 777 flights between Beijing
and Amsterdam. Through codeshare and blocked space agreements, both
airlines will be able to offer seats on each other? flights under
their own flight codes. KLM and China Southern have agreed to align
their loyalty programs for their codeshare flights between the Netherlands
and China. China Southern will transfer their flight handling at
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to KLM. Both airlines have agreed to
examine the potential for further cooperation.
