popular in Europe |

"These folks , quite simply, know what they're doing".
These are words of praise indeed for the management of Schiphol. Wall
Street Journal, the U.S. business journal, elected the Amsterdam airport
as the best in Europe, ahead of Frankfurt and Zurich which took second
and third place respectively. The airport (with 40 million passengers)
is praised for its well lighted open terminals, the "shop islets"
and the leather lounge chairs which are spread out in the terminals.
The only off-putting points worth mentioning are the small Schengenterminal
and the faltering baggage-claim system. President-director, Gerlach
Cerfontaine, was happy but not surprised by the news "This proves
once again that qualitatively Schiphol can be reckoned as one of the
best in the world".

| Airport
to expand |
| |
Over the next six years, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is to invest
EUR1.36 billion in a dramatic expansion that will up its capacity
from 39 million to 55 million passengers annually. Plans include the
construction of a fifth runway, two new piers, and a doubling in size
for Departure Hall 3. One of the new piers will be especially designed
to accommodate the new "super-jumbos" that will by then
be in service. Another will be constructed on the far side of the
motorway that runs past the airport, with a light-rail link to the
terminal buildings. When work is complete, the airport will have a
total of 112 gates and should be able to accommodate an increase to
550,000 flights annually.
